Getting started
The fastest path to a working Bean session, step by step:
- Install Bean from the App Store and open it.
- Tap through the onboarding screens. When asked, allow Microphone and Screen Recording permissions.
- (Optional but recommended) Set up the Action Button or Back Tap to launch Bean from anywhere — directions are inside the app, under Settings → Shortcut.
- From the home screen of the app, tap Start Chat. iOS will show the Start Broadcast sheet. Tap Start Broadcast.
- Talk normally. Bean watches your screen and answers out loud.
- Tap End in the app, or stop the broadcast from the iOS status bar, to finish.
Troubleshooting
If something isn't working, the issue is almost always one of these:
Bean can't see my screen
This means the Screen Recording permission isn't enabled or the
broadcast hasn't been started. Open Settings → Bean
on your iPhone and make sure Screen Recording is
turned on. Then re-open Bean, tap Start Chat,
and tap Start Broadcast on the iOS sheet that
appears.
While a session is active, you should see the red recording indicator in your status bar. If it isn't there, the broadcast isn't running.
Bean isn't hearing me
Check that the microphone permission is granted in
Settings → Bean → Microphone. Also check that you
haven't muted Bean from inside the app — there's a mute button on
the active session screen.
If you're on a phone call or another app is using the microphone (e.g. a voice recorder), iOS will block Bean from listening. End the other audio session and try again.
I can't hear Bean speak
Check these in order:
- The side silent / ring switch on your iPhone is set to ring (not silent).
- The volume is turned up using the volume buttons.
- Bluetooth headphones (like AirPods) are connected to the right device — if they're paired with your Mac or iPad, Bean's voice will play there instead.
- No other app is currently outputting audio that's taking priority.
The Action Button doesn't launch Bean
The Action Button is configured in iOS Settings, not in Bean.
Go to Settings → Action Button on your iPhone, swipe
to Shortcut, and pick the Bean shortcut from the
list. (If you don't see Bean in the list, open Bean once after
install so iOS registers its shortcut.)
For older iPhones without an Action Button, use Back Tap instead:
Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap, then
assign the Bean shortcut to a double or triple tap.
My session ended on its own
iOS will stop a screen broadcast when:
- You receive an incoming phone or FaceTime call.
- You enter low-power mode while on a low battery.
- An app explicitly asks to take over the screen capture.
- The system is under memory pressure.
When that happens, just tap Start Chat again to restart. Your previous turn isn't recoverable because nothing is stored — that's by design.
Bean answered the wrong thing about my screen
The model can occasionally misread small text, charts with unusual scales, or content partially hidden by overlays. If you get a wrong answer, try:
- Zooming in on the part of the screen you're asking about.
- Asking again, more specifically — e.g. "What does the red number in the top right mean?" rather than "What does this mean?"
- Following up. Bean keeps the thread of the current session, so you can correct or clarify.
How do I change Bean's voice?
Open Bean and go to Settings → Voice. Pick one of the available voices and the next session will use it.
Does Bean work offline?
No. Bean streams audio and screen frames to xAI in real time to generate the response, so an internet connection is required. Wi-Fi or cellular both work fine. Cellular usage is moderate — roughly comparable to a video call.
Which iPhones and iOS versions are supported?
Bean requires iPhone with iOS 17 or later. iPads are not supported in the current version. The Action Button is available on iPhone 15 Pro and newer; Back Tap is available on iPhone 8 and newer.
How do I delete my data?
There is nothing to delete on our side — Bean does not store your sessions, account information, or any personal data on our servers. To remove the small amount of local-only data Bean keeps on your iPhone (your voice preference, onboarding state), delete the app the normal way: long-press the icon, tap Remove App, then Delete App.
See the Privacy Policy for the full picture of what we do and don't keep.
Privacy questions
If your question is about what Bean does with your data, our full Privacy Policy covers it in detail. The short version: nothing is stored, no accounts, no tracking, no training on your inputs.
